As we launch our backpack, apparel and accessories company, I think back to my days in the U.S. Army.
I had plenty of occasions to go what nonmilitary folks aka civilians call backpacking. Let me share my experience and some tips for beginners below.
My rucksack was life, literally, everything I needed to survive for those multi-day excursions was right there on my back.
The design was perfect. A lightweight backpack with a supportive frame. Keeping the insides light with all my travel necessities was my job!
When you are 17, young and free, you pretty feel indestructible. Now, in my 40’s as I get back to good health,
I wish I had taken a bit more care of my body in my 30’s but I digress. I still have some backpacking to do more on that below.
I spent many nights in a pop up shelter using the porta potty during the day and the tree line at night,
Because really, whose walking all the way to the porta potty in full military gear in the woods, in the dark, not me,
I say pop-up shelter but we actually put in real work to get the sleeping arrangements up and suited for several women with sleeping bags and cots.
The best part about my time in the field aka backpacking was the life experience it gave me.
As a young girl from a small town in a big city,
Joining the Army was one of the best things I’ve done for my life; I am grateful for the strength, knowledge and empowerment that I gathered while serving my country,
As a mother of five daughters, I want to expose them more to the outdoors, hiking and nature so much more.
I do have a task ahead of me because two of my daughters have “special” care needs but I know we can figure it out and make it happen,
How about you, are you a Veteran? Do you just enjoy backpacking and hiking? Do have dreams of visiting a fun outdoor travel destination? Are you a large family that goes hiking and backpacking? I would love to hear from you!
